Developing Your Sentences and Paragraphs

If you have trouble converting your ideas into sentences and paragraphs, try one of the following methods for developing your thoughts.

Define or Classify

  • What is it?
  • What kind is it?
  • What is it composed of?
  • What does it do?
  • What type of group does it belong to?
The term diction has two different meanings: the style of speaking or writing as determined by choice of words; or the sound-quality and enunciation of words when spoken or sung.

Give an Example

  • Illustrate and explain your idea with an image, instance, or case.
Our sales will suffer if we continue to emphasize the features of our products rather than the benefits, e.g., instead of telling our customers our new computer comes with 32MB of RAM, we should explain that this will save them time by allowing all their programs to run concurrently.
