Keep Calm and Carry On Gen-X

by Roger HB Davies, CEO, McLuhan & Davies

This is the first in a trilogy of messages aimed at the three generations. Today, it’s Gen-X. Future messages will target Gen-Y and the Baby Boomers.

Most of us know roughly which Generation we’re in (e.g., Baby Boomers, Gen-X, Gen-Y). Not a big deal until recently. But now, probably for the first time, we face three generations (with influence) in the workplace at the same time.

The challenge is these three groups see things very differently. And it's proving a distraction in some organizations. The distraction involves differences/preferences/perspectives, and it's not usually about what's right or wrong.

But most distractions could be solved if all generations understood each other better.

Mutual understanding would in fact produce more collaboration, improved communication and increased productivity.

The part solution to this, although perhaps they may not all quite realize it, lies with Gen-X.

I think us Boomers have a sneaking admiration for this generation. Maybe they focus on areas that we Boomers got wrong. Especially the work life/balance.

Gen-X also possess unique opportunities to lead. But in a way that's different from the other generations. Many Gen-Xers see themselves partly as mediators in life. This role presents major opportunities in the workplace since they can bridge the Boomer/Gen-Y divide, and act as role models for the Gen-Y leaders of the future.

Gen-X sit squarely in both camps. They understand the values of the Boomer, having probably been raised by them. And Gen-X are familiar with the tech-savvy world of Gen-Y.

So it's not a major shift to impart some realities of the changing workworld to both the Boomers and Gen-Y.

Gen-X possess an amazing opportunity to contribute as follows:

  1. Take a leadership role in your organization that lies beyond your job description. Be aware that it’s easier for you to see both sides of the Boomer/Gen-Y divide. Both the Boomers and Gen-Y should value your opinion as de facto mediators.

  2. Put yourself into situations that allow you to "mediate" tactfully. E.g., at meetings.

  3. Refine your communication skills. Perhaps you more than any of the three generations will be challenged to flex/shift to the differing communication styles and values of both the Boomer and Gen-Y.

That’s why we vote: Keep Calm and Carry on Gen-X.
