Keep Calm and Carry On Gen-Y
by Roger HB Davies, CEO, McLuhan & Davies
So you are a Gen-Y and you want to get ahead?
Well, many of you can be helped by Baby Boomers.
How to impress them? That's your challenge. How to communicate with them effectively? How to influence?
Our research shows clearly that Boomers and Gen-Y communicate differently in two distinct ways.
- Boomers tend to be a more analytical lot. In fact, over 50 percent of them prefer analytical communication.
- Gen-Y can handle the analytical part, but tend to be more spontaneous. Which leads to your direct communication style. This provides your being perceived as outspoken, with a reputation for saying what's on your mind.
So what do these differences mean? How can you use these differences to your advantage?
The following tips will stand you in good stead with Boomers.
- Accept that your differences in communication style are mere preferences, and not about right and wrong.
- You might have to explain that being direct is not about your being rude. Because people sometimes read directness that way.
- Accept that your directness is a valued commodity! Upfront communication! We know where you stand! Every organization needs this—but not all of your managers may appreciate it.
- If your message is that important, put it into writing (concisely and clearly) to Boomers. Then follow-up with a request for a one-on-one meeting.
- Brush up/refine your written and verbal communication skills. Boomers value a well-written, grammatically-sound and logical document, as well as a concise verbal presentation.
- Don't let a relaxed atmosphere in your office lead you to fall down in the physical appearance front. Boomers are impressed by a professional appearance, even on dress-down days.
Gen-Y: You've plenty to offer, but you can help your own cause by following the established business protocols, and still be yourself.
That why we say Keep Calm and Carry On Gen-Y.
